چکیده

Recent X-ray observations of star-forming galaxies such as M82 have shown the Lyβ/Lyα line ratio of Ne X to be in excess of predictions for thermal electron impact excitation. Here we demonstrate that the observed line ratio may be due to charge exchange and can be used to constrain the ion kinetic energy to be . 500 eV/u. This is accomplished by computing spectra and line ratios via a range of theoretical methods and comparing these to experiments with He over astrophysically relevant collision energies. The charge exchange emission spectra calculations were performed for Ne+ H and Ne+ He using widely applied approaches including the atomic orbital close coupling, classical trajectory Monte Carlo, and multichannel LandauZener (MCLZ) methods. A comparison of the results from these methods indicates that for the considered energy range and neutrals (H, He) the so-called “low-energy l-distribution” MCLZ method provides the most likely reliable predictions.

A Search for EUV Emission from Comets with the Cosmic Hot Interstellar Plasma Spectrometer ( CHIPS )

– 2 – We have obtained EUV spectra between 90 and 255Å of the comets C/2002 T7 (LINEAR), C/2001 Q4 (NEAT), and C/2004 Q2 (Machholz) near their perihelion passages in 2004 with the Cosmic Hot Interstellar Plasma Spectrometer (CHIPS). We obtained contemporaneous data on Comet NEAT Q4 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory ACIS instrument, marking the first simultaneous EUV and X-ray spectral observat...

A proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis of concentration of trace elements in varicose veins

Background: Proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) has been applied as reliable and improved techniques in this study to compare concentration of various trace elements in normal and abnormal varicose veins. Materials and Methods: Five samples from normal veins and 13 samples from varicose veins bombarded by 2.0 MeV energy proton beams produced by a Van de Graff accelerator in vacuum. T...

X-Ray and Extreme Ultraviolet Emission from Comets

The discovery of high energy X-ray emission in 1996 from C/1996 B2 (Hyakutake) has created a surprising new class of X-ray emitting objects. The original discovery (Lisse et al., 1996) and subsequent detection of X-rays from 17 other comets (Table 1) have shown that the very soft (E < 1 keV) emission is due to an interaction between the solar wind and the comet’s atmosphere, and that X-ray emis...

Solar wind charge exchange and local hot bubble X-ray emission with the DXL sounding rocket experiment

The Diffuse X-ray emission from the Local Galaxy (DXL) sounding rocket is a NASA approved mission with a scheduled first launch in December 2012. Its goal is to identify and separate the X-ray emission of the solar wind charge exchange (SWCX) from that of the local hot bubble (LHB) to improve our understanding of both. To separate the SWCX contribution from the LHB, DXL will use the SWCX signat...

X-ray emission following charge exchange has been studied on the University of California Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory electron beam ion traps EBITI and EBIT-II using a high-resolution microcalorimeter. The measured spectra include the K-shell emission from hydrogenlike and heliumlike C, N, O, and Ne needed for simulations of cometary x-ray emission. A comparison of the spectra produc...
